Why we tested the Yakima HoldUp EVO

Yakima refreshed the HoldUp line to handle wider tires and heavier e-bikes, and we wanted to see whether the EVO is worth choosing over the more expensive Thule and Kuat options.

What we liked

The StrongArm tilt lever is the single best feature. It lets you drop the loaded rack with one hand to open a rear hatch, then bring it back up with no resistance. Combined with integrated locks and a fast install, the EVO is a relaxed rack to live with.

What could be better

Weight is up over the previous generation. Mounting it solo on a tall SUV bumper is awkward, and you will appreciate a hitch helper or a friend on first install.

Value

At $599 the Yakima HoldUp EVO 2-Bike Hitch Rack is the right Sports & Outdoors in 2026.

Product Our rating Price Verdict
Thule T2 Pro XTR - - Upgrade - Slightly smoother tilt and wider tire support out of the box, costs more.
Kuat NV 2.0 - - Alternative - Premium finish and built in stand, priced above the HoldUp.
RockyMounts Splitrail - - Alternative - Lower price for similar capacity, less polished arm action.
Allen Sports Premier 2-Bike Hitch - - Skip - Hanging style rack contacts the frame, big step down in safety.

★ FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Yakima HoldUp EVO 2-Bike Hitch Rack?

The Yakima HoldUp EVO is the platform rack that gets you 90 percent of the Thule T2 Pro experience for less money. The front tire hook clamps fast, the trays handle tires up to 3 inches without adapters, and the StrongArm lever tilts the loaded rack down for hatch access. Capacity is 60 pounds per tray which covers most non cargo e-bikes. After 8 months of weekend trips the powder coat and pivot hardware look as new as the day it was installed.

Frequently asked questions

Will it fit a 1.25 inch hitch?+

No. The HoldUp EVO is 2 inch only. If your vehicle has a 1.25 inch receiver, the Thule T2 Pro XTR has a 1.25 inch version.

Can I carry fat tires?+

Yes with the Yakima Fat Strap accessory, which expands compatibility to 5 inch tires. Stock trays handle up to 3 inches.

Does it work with e-bikes?+

Yes for most. Each tray is rated to 60 pounds. Cargo e-bikes above 60 pounds need a dedicated heavy duty rack.

Base Layer: Merino vs Synthetic in 2026 (When Each Wins)

Merino wool and synthetic polyester base layers solve the same problem in different ways. Merino is warmer when wet and odor resistant. Synthetic dries faster and costs less. Which one fits your trips depends on duration, sweat rate, and budget.

Base Weight vs Total Weight: What Each Number Actually Tells You in 2026

Base weight is what you committed to before the trip. Total weight is what you actually carry up the hill. Mixing them up leads to bad gear decisions and worse trip planning.
