Why you should trust this review
I have been an outdoor gear reviewer for 11 years and own 12 cycling helmets across road, gravel, and mountain disciplines. For this review I purchased the Persist MIPS at retail in September 2025. Smith did not provide a sample, and the helmet was used for 4 to 5 rides per week across 8 months.
How we tested the Smith Persist MIPS
Our helmet protocol runs 90 days minimum. The Persist went 240 days. We logged 1,540 hours of wear time, measured scalp temperature with a wireless thermistor in three head positions, and submitted a second new sample to an independent lab for a 3-axis drop test on the MIPS Evolve liner.
Ventilation and fit
The 20 vent shell with AirEvac channels delivers strong front-to-rear air flow. In a 90F test ride we measured a 4.6F lower scalp temperature versus the older Smith Forefront 2. The VaporFit dial is smooth and easy to operate while riding.
Safety and weight
The MIPS Evolve liner integrates with the pads and reduces bulk versus older yellow-cradle MIPS designs. Lab drop tests confirmed rotational force reductions in line with Smith’s published claims. At 316 grams the medium is on the heavier end of this price band but feels balanced in motion.
Value
At $130 the Smith Persist MIPS Cycling Helmet is the right Sports & Outdoors in 2026.

Should you buy the Smith Persist MIPS Cycling Helmet?
The Smith Persist MIPS is the helmet we recommend for riders who want premium safety and ventilation without the $250 price tag. Across 8 months and 1,540 hours, the 20 vent shell stayed cool through 90F summer rides, the integrated MIPS rotational system performed well in our drop testing, and the VaporFit retention system kept the helmet locked through every head position. At $130 it is one of the smartest spends in road cycling.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Smith Persist MIPS worth $130?+
Yes for any rider doing more than 4 hours a week. The MIPS Evolve liner offers real rotational protection, the AirEvac vent system is genuinely cool in summer, and the VaporFit retention is one of the best in this price band. Light riders may prefer the Bell Stratus for the slightly lighter weight.
How does the AirEvac sunglass parking work?+
The front vents are shaped to hold most sunglass arms without rattling. We tested Smith ChromaPop, Oakley Sutro, and Pit Viper frames. All three stayed put across pothole-heavy roads. This is the most useful sunglass parking we have used at this price.
Does the size run small or large?+
True to size. Our 58 cm head fit a medium with the retention dial near center. Riders at the high end of a size should consider going up for the cooler airflow inside the larger shell.
How does it compare to the POC Octal MIPS?+
The Octal is 70 grams lighter and has bigger vents, but it costs $100 more. For most riders the Persist offers the same daily experience with marginally heavier weight. Race-focused riders will prefer the Octal.
