Why you should trust this review
I have shaved with electric razors for almost 16 years, mostly Braun, with a brief Panasonic Arc 5 (older generation) stint in 2022. The Arc 5 LV97-S reviewed here was bought at retail from Amazon in October 2025 for $279. Panasonic did not provide the unit.
I have a dense, coarse beard with awkward grain on the neck. The first time I tried Panasonic’s Arc 5 line in 2022 the cutting speed surprised me; coming back to the line in 2025 with the LV97 confirmed that impression.
How we tested the Panasonic Arc 5 LV97-S
- 7 months of daily use, dry shaving on weekdays and wet shaving on weekends.
- Battery runtime measured continuously from full charge until cut-off (49 minutes).
- Cutting speed timed across the same beard area against the Braun Series 9 Pro+ for 4 weeks.
- Closeness compared head-to-head with the Braun on the cheek, jaw, and neck regions.
- Cleaning station versus manual cleaning split-tested for 4 weeks. See our methodology.
- Comfort tracked on a 1-to-10 self-rating scale.
Who should buy the Panasonic Arc 5 LV97?
Buy it if you have a thick or coarse beard, you want the fastest possible electric shave, you want a cleaning station included rather than as a $80 add-on, or you do not love the Braun head shape and want a different ergonomic.
Skip it if your priority is absolute closeness on a fine beard (the Braun Series 9 Pro+ wins by the slimmest margin), you have very small hands and find heavier shavers fatiguing, or you specifically prefer the rotary feel of a Norelco.
Cutting speed: the standout feature
The 14,000 CPM linear motor is the fastest in any electric shaver I have used. The difference shows on dense beard areas: the neck, the under-chin, the moustache. With the Braun Series 9 the neck takes 3 to 4 deliberate passes to clear; with the Panasonic the same area clears in 2 passes.
For me a typical full shave dropped from about 4 minutes (Braun Series 9) to about 3 minutes (Arc 5 LV97). That sounds small until you do it daily for a year and add up the time saved.
Closeness: 95 percent of the Braun Pro+
In direct head-to-head testing on the same beard area, the Braun Series 9 Pro+ shave felt marginally closer on the cheek, perhaps a quarter of a millimetre closer. On the neck and jaw the Panasonic is at parity or slightly ahead because the faster motor handles dense flat-lying hair more efficiently.
The 30-degree precision-honed blades slice the hair at the angle barber shears use, which Panasonic says reduces tugging. After 7 months of daily use the comfort holds up; I have not had the post-shave skin sensitivity that some lesser shavers cause.
Pivoting head: four directions
The active multi-fit head pivots in 4 directions and follows facial contours convincingly. On the jaw line the head stays flush more reliably than my retired Braun Series 7’s pivot. The Series 9 Pro+ has a comparable head; both are good. This is now table stakes at this price.
Battery: 49 minutes measured
Panasonic rates 50 minutes. We measured 49 minutes after 7 months of daily use, which is 98 percent of rated. Battery retention is excellent. A 3-minute shave per day means a single charge handles roughly 16 shaves.
The charging dock connects via a proprietary cable to a base station. There is no USB-C; this is the most dated thing about the LV97 in 2026. The Braun Pro+ uses USB-C, which is a small but real advantage.
Cleaning station: included and useful
The included station charges, cleans, and dries the shaver in one cycle. The detergent cartridge runs about a month in daily use and refill cartridges cost $20. Over a year that is $240, which is enough to factor into ownership cost.
For comparison, the Braun Series 9 Pro+ at $349 does not include a station; the with-station SKU is $429. The Panasonic Arc 5 LV97 includes the station at $279. On total cost of ownership over the first year, the Panasonic is cheaper.
What is missing
No app, no display, no smart features. USB-C charging would be welcome. The Arc 5 LV97 is a focused tool that does the job extremely well; the omissions are not faults.
The LV97 in context
For thick beards and time-pressed mornings, the Panasonic Arc 5 LV97 is the shaver I would buy. For absolute closeness on a fine beard, the Braun Series 9 Pro+ is the small upgrade. Both are excellent. The Panasonic offers more value at the price.

Should you buy the Panasonic Arc 5 ES-LV97-S?
The Panasonic Arc 5 ES-LV97-S is the fastest-cutting electric shaver I have used. The 14,000 CPM linear motor is genuinely faster than the Braun Series 9 (10,000 sonic vibrations) and you can feel the difference on a thick neck beard, the shave is over before the Braun would have finished. The five precision-honed blades at a 30-degree angle slice rather than rip, the head pivots in 4 directions to follow facial contours, and the included cleaning station handles all maintenance. After seven months it is the most efficient shave I have run. At $279 it undercuts the Braun Series 9 Pro+ by $70 and gives up only the slimmest closeness margin.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Panasonic Arc 5 LV97 worth $279 in 2026?+
Yes. The included cleaning station is a $80 value, the cutting speed is the fastest in the category, and the closeness is within touching distance of the Braun Series 9 Pro+. Excellent value for a premium shaver.
Arc 5 LV97 vs Braun Series 9 Pro+, which is closer?+
The Braun gave a marginally closer cheek shave in my testing; the Panasonic shaved the neck faster. Both are excellent. Pick the Panasonic for thick or coarse beards; pick the Braun for absolute closeness.
How long does the battery actually last?+
Panasonic rates 50 minutes. We measured 49 minutes after 7 months of daily use, which is excellent battery retention. Each shave takes 3 to 5 minutes, so a charge handles 10+ shaves.
Is the cleaning station necessary?+
Not necessary, but useful. Manual cleaning under the tap works fine. The station extends the lifespan of the foils slightly and saves the 30-second daily clean. The included station was the deciding factor for me over the no-station Braun base SKU.
