Worm castings are often called ‘black gold’ by serious gardeners, and after using the Worm Factory 360 for a full season, the description is accurate. The quality of the compost produced by vermicomposting - fine, odour-free, biologically rich castings - exceeds what most tumbling composters produce, and the continuous production model means you are always harvesting usable material.

How We Tested

We set up the Worm Factory 360 with 1 pound of red wigglers and ran it for 14 weeks indoors in a garage (temperature ranging 55-75°F). We tracked the establishment period, the time to first castings harvest, worm population growth, worm tea production volume, and the physical quality of castings. We also tested the tray migration claim - whether worms actually moved up through the tray grid to follow fresh food.

Performance

The establishment period (the first 2-3 weeks while the worm colony adjusts to its new environment) was the main patience requirement. Feeding was kept light and the system was left undisturbed. By week three, the colony had visibly increased and was processing a 2-cup weekly kitchen scrap addition without issue.

Tray migration worked as the design intends. By week six, the bottom tray contained almost exclusively finished castings with no active worm population, while most worms had migrated to tray two and three where fresh material was available. Harvesting the bottom tray involved lifting it off, emptying the finished castings, and reinstalling it at the top of the stack - approximately five minutes of work and zero disruption to the active colony.

Worm tea production began by week three once the base tray had sufficient liquid draining through it. We collected approximately 500ml per week, diluted 1:10 and applied to container plants. Plants receiving worm tea showed measurably better foliage density and fruit set compared to plants receiving no supplemental liquid feeding.

Finished castings from the Worm Factory at 14 weeks were the finest-textured, most nutrient-rich looking compost we produced across all five composters - dark, crumbly, with a forest floor smell.

Who Should Buy This

The Worm Factory 360 is the right composter for gardeners who want the highest quality castings, can commit to the modest management a worm bin requires, and have kitchen scraps as their primary composting input. It is particularly well-suited for apartment and small-space gardeners who cannot use outdoor tumbling composters. The $130 investment is justified by the ongoing production of high-value worm castings and liquid fertiliser throughout the year.

★ FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Worm Factory 360 Worm Composting Bin?

The Worm Factory 360 is the most well-designed home vermicomposting system available. Worms migrate upward through the stacking trays, leaving finished castings in the bottom trays ready to harvest without disturbing the colony. The spigot-equipped base collects worm tea continuously. After three months, we were harvesting high-quality castings and producing liquid fertiliser weekly.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I get the worms for the Worm Factory 360?+

Worms are sold separately. Red wigglers (Eisenia fetida) are the recommended species - they are surface-dwelling worms adapted to living in organic material. Purchase from local garden centres, fishing supply stores, or online. Start with 1 pound (approximately 1,000 worms).

Does a worm bin smell?+

A properly managed worm bin should smell like fresh earth, not rot. Odour problems indicate overfeeding, too much wet material, or overheating. The Worm Factory's tray design and ventilation are well-calibrated for odour management.

Can I put a worm bin indoors?+

Yes. The Worm Factory 360 is designed for indoor use. Maintain a temperature between 55-77°F, keep out of direct sunlight, and manage moisture correctly. Many users keep it in a garage, basement, or kitchen.
