The Hue Bridge 2 is the unsung hero of Philips Hue. After 14 months in our house with 22 Hue lights, 4 friends-of-Hue switches, and 3 motion sensors, the bridge has stayed up the entire time. Not rebooted. Not unplugged. Just running. This is the kind of reliability that Wi-Fi smart bulbs cannot match.

Why you should trust this review

We bought the bridge at retail in 2024 and gradually added 22 Hue lights across 6 rooms. Morgan runs a HomeKit-first house with parallel Alexa and Google Home integrations. We tested the bridge against an Aqara Hub M3 and an IKEA Dirigera over the past 14 months.

How we tested

  • 14 months of continuous uptime
  • 22 Hue lights across 6 rooms
  • 4 friends-of-Hue switches (Lutron Aurora and Hue Tap)
  • 3 Hue motion sensors with custom routines
  • Matter exposure tested across Apple Home, Alexa, and Google Home
  • See our methodology

Reliability

Zero unplanned reboots over 14 months. The bridge does occasional firmware updates that require a 30-second restart but that is it.

Matter support

The Matter bridge update arrived late 2024 and works as expected. Hue lights appear in any Matter controller as individual accessories. Scenes still require the Hue app to author.

Friends of Hue

The Lutron Aurora switch (a $40 dimmer that mounts over an existing wall switch) is the killer Hue accessory. We have 4 of them and they pair directly to the bridge with no extra hub.

Value

At $59 the Philips Hue Bridge 2 Smart Home Hub is the right Smart Home in 2026.

★ FINAL VERDICT

Should you buy the Philips Hue Bridge 2 Smart Home Hub?

The Hue Bridge 2 is the reason Hue lights stay reliable when Wi-Fi smart bulbs do not. It runs a dedicated Zigbee 3.0 network for Hue and friends-of-Hue devices, exposes them to HomeKit and Matter, and stays up for months at a time. The downside is that you absolutely need the bridge to unlock scenes, entertainment, and Matter exposure, even though Hue keeps teasing Bluetooth-only control. At $59 the Hue Bridge 2 is the right entry into Philips Hue in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Hue Bridge 2 worth $59 in 2026?+

Yes if you plan to own more than two Hue lights. The bridge unlocks scenes, entertainment sync, motion sensor automations, and Matter exposure. Bluetooth-only Hue control is too limited.

Hue Bridge 2 vs Aqara Hub M3?+

Hue Bridge for Hue lights. Aqara Hub M3 if you want one hub for Aqara sensors and a broader Zigbee + Thread + Matter network. Most Hue users keep both.

Does the Hue Bridge 2 work with Matter?+

Yes. After the 2024 firmware update, the bridge is a Matter bridge that exposes Hue lights to any Matter controller (Alexa, Google, Apple, SmartThings).

Can I run Hue without the bridge?+

Technically yes via Bluetooth, but you lose scenes, entertainment sync, motion sensors, away-from-home control, and Matter exposure. Not worth it.
