Hill’s Science Diet Adult Sensitive Stomach & Skin is the kibble we reach for when a healthy adult dog has chronically inconsistent stool and dry, flaky skin but no other clinical findings. Both of the dogs in this review (a 26 kg Labrador mix and a 14 kg cocker spaniel) had been on supermarket chicken-and-rice kibble with mixed results. Stools graded 5 to 6 on the Purina fecal scoring chart roughly twice a week, and the cocker scratched her flanks badly enough during pollen season to require a cone. Seven months on this formula, the Lab now grades 3 to 4 daily, and the cocker has gone from twice-daily flank scratching to a few episodes a week.
Why you should trust this review
We bought both bags at retail from a mid-Atlantic PetSmart, with no manufacturer involvement. The author has been writing pet nutrition coverage for The Tested Hub since 2024 and has reviewed 9 adult dry dog foods to date. Stool quality was logged daily on the Purina fecal scoring chart by the dogs’ regular owner. Skin and coat condition was logged weekly with a phone photo of the same flank patch under the same kitchen lighting.
How we tested Hill’s Sensitive Stomach & Skin
- 7 month feeding window, October 2025 through April 2026
- Two adult dogs of different sizes and breeds
- Daily stool scoring on the Purina 1 to 7 scale, owner-blind to test brand
- Weekly flank coat photo, same lighting
- Weight check every two weeks, same scale
- Transition followed Hill’s recommended 7 day step-up

Who should buy Hill’s Sensitive Stomach & Skin?
Buy if your adult dog has consistent loose stool or seasonal coat dryness, your vet has ruled out parasites and food allergy, and you want a vet-stocked complete-and-balanced kibble.
Skip if your dog already does fine on a regular adult formula, if you specifically need a grain-free recipe, or if your priority is the cheapest kibble per pound.
Stool firmness: a real, repeatable improvement
The Lab’s stool score moved from a weekly average of 5.1 in the four weeks pre-transition to 3.6 by week 8 on the formula and held there. The cocker’s average moved from 4.7 to 3.4. Owners often credit “the prebiotic”, but the more likely driver is the combination of moderate fiber (4.0 percent maximum), beet pulp, and the consistent calorie density (359 kcal per cup) that keeps portion sizes stable.
Coat and skin: gradual but visible by week 6
Skin improvements take longer than gut improvements because skin turns over every 21 to 28 days in dogs. The cocker’s flank photos showed obviously less dander by week 6 and visibly tighter, less flaky skin by week 12. We do not credit any single ingredient. The minimum 3.4 percent omega-6 plus the vitamin E supplementation listed on the guaranteed analysis are reasonable contributors.
Palatability: accepted without bribery
Both dogs accepted the kibble plain on day one of the transition mix. Neither walked away from a meal during the 7 month window. Hill’s uses a smaller kibble piece than Royal Canin Maxi Adult, which suited the cocker.
Value: not cheap, but the price gap is shrinking
At $84.99 for a 30 lb bag, the cost per pound is $2.83. Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach Salmon runs around $2.66 per pound at the same retailer. The price gap is real but smaller than it was two years ago, and Hill’s is still easier to find at chain vet clinics if you are traveling.

Should you buy the Hill's Science Diet Adult Sensitive Stomach & Skin Chicken Recipe Dry Dog Food?
Hill's Science Diet Adult Sensitive Stomach & Skin is the formula we point owners toward when a dog has otherwise normal energy and weight but inconsistent stool plus dry, flaky skin. The first ingredient is chicken, the prebiotic fiber blend is on the label, and omega-6 fatty acids are guaranteed at 3.4 percent minimum. Pricier than grocery kibble, but the AAFCO statement covers adult maintenance and most U.S. vet clinics stock it.
Frequently asked questions
Is Hill's Sensitive Stomach & Skin worth $85 for a 30 lb bag in 2026?+
If your dog has chronically loose stool or itchy flanks and your vet has ruled out allergy and parasite causes, yes. The prebiotic fiber and omega-6 levels are higher than baseline Hill's, and the AAFCO label covers adult maintenance.
Hill's Sensitive Stomach & Skin vs Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach: which works better?+
Pro Plan Salmon leads on protein source novelty if your dog reacts to chicken, while Hill's leads on vet stocking. We have seen both improve stool quality within three weeks when transitioned slowly.
How long until I see improvement in my dog's coat?+
Owner reviews and our two test dogs both showed visible reduction in dander and flank scratching by weeks 4 to 6. Skin turnover takes that long, so do not expect overnight results.
Should I upgrade from Hill's regular Adult to Sensitive Stomach & Skin?+
Only if your dog has documented stool or skin issues. The regular formula is cheaper and AAFCO complete; switching for non-clinical reasons is not necessary.
Is this formula grain-free?+
No. It contains whole grain wheat, brewers rice, and corn gluten meal. Owners avoiding grain ingredients should look at the Hill's Science Diet Sensitive Stomach Salmon recipe instead.
