The Nest Audio is the rare Google speaker that is exactly what it claims to be. After 7 months across two rooms (one stereo pair, one solo unit in a kitchen) it is the smart speaker we keep recommending under $100. This review covers the sound, the assistant, the stereo pairing, and the Matter situation.
Why you should trust this review
We bought both Nest Audio units at retail. Morgan runs a mixed Google and Apple household and tested the speakers against the Echo (4th Gen), HomePod mini, and a Sonos One left over from 2023. Listening tests used the same Spotify and Apple Music tracks at the same SPL across all units.
How we tested
- 7 months across two rooms
- Stereo pair benchmarked in a 20 sqm office
- 30 daily voice interactions logged for assistant accuracy
- A/B against Echo, HomePod mini, and Sonos One at matched SPL
- See our methodology
Sound quality
The 75mm woofer is the headline. Vocals sit forward without being shouty, and the 19mm tweeter handles cymbals cleanly up to about 80 percent volume before any harshness creeps in. Bass is present down to around 60 Hz, then rolls off, expected for the size.
Assistant
Google Assistant remains the most natural for follow-up questions. We logged 30 daily voice interactions over 14 days. Successful first-attempt rate was 94 percent, ahead of Alexa on the same Echo 4th Gen at 89 percent in the same room.
Stereo pairing
Two Nest Audios in stereo turn a 20 sqm room from background music into proper listening. Setup is 90 seconds in the Google Home app.
Value
At $99 the Google Nest Audio Smart Speaker is the right Smart Home in 2026.

Should you buy the Google Nest Audio Smart Speaker?
The Nest Audio is the smart speaker Google should have launched the whole line with. The 75mm woofer plus 19mm tweeter delivers a warm midrange that is far ahead of any Nest Mini. Google Assistant still leads on natural conversation and household routines. Stereo pairing two units fills a 20 sqm room cleanly. At $99 the Google Nest Audio is the right smart speaker for anyone already in the Google ecosystem in 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Nest Audio worth $99 in 2026?+
Yes. The 75mm woofer plus tweeter combo still beats any sub-$100 Alexa speaker on midrange. If you are in the Google ecosystem, this is the obvious pick.
Nest Audio vs HomePod mini?+
Nest Audio wins on midrange and on assistant flexibility. HomePod mini wins on bass weight relative to size and on Apple Home tightness. Pick by the ecosystem you already own.
Can two Nest Audios be stereo paired?+
Yes. Setup takes about 90 seconds in the Google Home app. We paired two in a 20 sqm office and the stereo image is genuinely wide.
Does the Nest Audio work with Matter?+
It is a Thread-capable endpoint but not a Matter controller. You still need a Nest Hub Max or a Nest Wifi Pro as the Matter controller in a Google household.
