The Frontgate Heritage Stocking Holder Set is the heavyweight mantel hook we rely on every December. After two seasons of weighted stocking display, an 8 lb stocking test on polished marble, and side-by-side against the Pottery Barn brass and Williams Sonoma marble alternatives, the Frontgate is the most stable stocking holder we have tested. This review covers the cast iron build, the weight capacity, and where the lighter alternatives fall short on heavy stockings.
Why you should trust this review
We bought our Frontgate set at retail in November 2024. Morgan has tested mantel hardware professionally for a holiday display company since 2018, including stocking holders from Frontgate, Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma, Crate & Barrel, and the budget aisle of every major retailer. We tested the Frontgate set against a Pottery Barn brass set we own and a borrowed Williams Sonoma marble base set on the same polished marble mantel.
How we tested the Heritage Set
- 18 months of ownership across two holiday seasons
- 8 lb weighted stocking test on polished marble, brushed marble, and oak mantels
- Slide threshold measured by lateral pull at increasing weights
- Felt pad inspected at the start and end of each season
- Bronze finish inspected for tarnish after summer storage
- Side-by-side against Pottery Barn brass and Williams Sonoma marble base

Who should buy the Heritage Set
Buy it if you have a polished marble or stone mantel where lighter holders slide, you stuff heavy stockings, and you want a holder you keep for decades.
Skip it if you have a low-traffic mantel and lightweight stockings, the Pottery Barn brass at $39 is the lighter alternative. Skip it if you cannot lift 17 lb of holders out of the box, the set is heavy by design.
Weight capacity
8 lb stocking on polished marble without slide. We tested by adding weight in 1 lb increments to a stocking on the hook. On wood and stone mantels we did not reach the limit at 12 lb. The 4.2 lb base is the differentiator.
Finish durability
Polished bronze finish has not tarnished after two seasons of garage storage in a sealed bin. Fingerprints wipe off with a soft cloth. We do not use metal polish, which can dull the finish.
Mantel protection
The felt pad on the base of each holder protects the mantel surface. Two seasons on polished marble produced no scratches. We check and replace the felt pad if it shows wear.
Build quality
Solid cast iron, not hollow stamped steel. Each holder weighs 4.2 lb, which is the cause of the weight capacity. The set ships at 17 lb total in the box.
Aesthetic
The Heritage profile is traditional, more brass-toned than bright bronze. It pairs with classic mantel decor like garland, candles, and a Hallmark Keepsake. We think it would look out of place on a minimalist modern mantel.
Hook design
The hook arm is wide enough for thick fur-cuff stocking loops. Our heaviest stocking has a 1.5 inch wide cuff loop and slides on without forcing.
Value
At $79 the Frontgate Heritage Stocking Holder Set is the right Home & Garden in 2026.
