I have 3A curls and have refined my routine over 8 years from frizzy mess to consistently defined curls. The pattern is now reliable. Here’s what works for type 2-3 hair.

The Routine Framework

The curly girl approach to hair care:

  1. Cleanse appropriately (low-poo, co-wash, or rinse only)
  2. Condition deeply (deep conditioner weekly)
  3. Apply leave-in to soaking wet hair
  4. Apply styling product to soaking wet hair
  5. Scrunch upward to encourage curl
  6. Plop or diffuse to dry

This sequence creates defined, frizz-free curls. Variations exist for different hair types within the curly spectrum.

Step 1: Cleansing

Standard shampoo problem: Sulfates (SLS, SLES) strip natural oils that curly hair needs to remain hydrated.

Cleansing options:

Clarifying shampoo: 1x monthly to remove product buildup. Stronger detergent removes residual styling product accumulation that prevents proper hydration.

Step 2: Conditioning

Regular conditioner: Every wash. Apply to mid-length and ends, not scalp. Leave on 5-10 minutes for absorption. Detangle with wide-tooth comb in shower while conditioner is in.

Deep conditioner: 1x weekly or biweekly. Heavier conditioner left on 15-30 minutes. SheaMoisture Manuka Honey Deep Conditioner, Briogeo Don’t Despair Repair.

Leave-in conditioner: Apply to soaking wet hair before styling. Adds moisture base for styling products. Mielle Pomegranate Honey Leave-In, Cantu Coconut Curling Cream.

Step 3: Styling Products

The key principle: apply to soaking wet hair. Damp hair causes frizz.

Gel (heaviest hold): Forms a “cast” around hair that breaks for defined curls when scrunched after drying. DevaCurl B’Leave-In, Aussie Instant Freeze, Eco Styler Gel.

Mousse (medium hold): Lighter texture, less hold. Good for type 2 wavy hair that doesn’t need heavy product.

Custards/Cream (light hold): Moisture-focused, minimal hold. Best for stretched-out wavy hair where definition isn’t goal.

Product layering:

  1. Leave-in conditioner first
  2. Curl cream second
  3. Gel third (for hold and definition)

Step 4: Drying

Air dry: 4-8 hours depending on hair length. Lowest heat damage. Most defined curls but takes time.

Plop: Wrap soaking-wet curl-products-applied hair in a microfiber towel or cotton T-shirt. Rests on top of head for 15-30 minutes. Absorbs water while preserving curl pattern. Speeds drying and reduces frizz.

Diffuse: Hair dryer with diffuser attachment. Low heat. Either “pixie diffuse” (lift sections into diffuser bowl) or “hover diffuse” (hold diffuser near curls without disturbing). 15-25 minutes to fully dry. Best balance of speed and curl preservation.

Avoid: Towel-drying with regular cotton towel (causes frizz), brushing dry hair (separates curls into frizz), high-heat blow dryer without diffuser.

Step 5: Scrunching the Cast

When hair dries with gel, the gel forms a “cast” that feels crunchy. Don’t worry - this is correct. Once fully dry, scrunch upward gently to break the cast and reveal defined curls underneath. Apply small amount of hair oil to palm and scrunch into ends to soften curls further.

Between Washes

Pineapple at night: Loose ponytail on top of head. Preserves curl pattern overnight.

Silk/satin pillowcase: Reduces friction that creates frizz. Cotton pillowcases damage curls overnight.

Refresh spray: Mix water + small amount of leave-in conditioner in a spray bottle. Spritz curls in morning to refresh shape.

No daytime brushing: Brushes destroy curl pattern. Fingers and wide-tooth combs only when wet.

Common Mistakes

Brushing dry hair: Turns defined curls into frizz cloud.

Skipping leave-in conditioner: Curly hair needs more moisture than styling products alone provide.

Applying products to damp hair: Causes frizz. Apply to soaking wet.

Washing too frequently: Strips moisture, increases frizz.

Using sulfate shampoo daily: Damages curl pattern over time.

Buying expensive curl products without trying basics: Cheap drugstore products (Cantu, SheaMoisture, Eco Styler) work for most users. Start there before $30 boutique products.

Inconsistent routine: Curls require consistency. Hopping between products and routines never lets you see what works.

Type-Specific Notes

Type 2 (wavy): Lighter products. Mousse and curl creams better than heavy gel. Diffuser optional.

Type 3A (loose curls): Light to medium gel + curl cream. Diffuser preferred.

Type 3B/C (defined to tight curls): Heavier gels, more product. Plopping essential. Diffuser preferred.

Adjust products based on porosity:

  • Low porosity (water beads up): Lighter products, avoid heavy oils
  • Normal porosity: Most products work
  • High porosity (hair absorbs water fast): Heavier creams, layering essential

My Current Routine

Total annual cost: about $120-150 in products. Defined curls 90% of days. Time investment: 15-25 minutes wash days (2x weekly), 2-3 minutes refresh between.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between type 2 and 3?+

Type 2 is wavy (S-shape, loose to defined). Type 3 is curly (corkscrew shape, loose 3A to tight 3C). Type 4 is coily/kinky. The number signifies pattern; A/B/C signifies size. Type 2A is loose waves, 3C is tight defined curls.

Sulfate-free shampoo necessary?+

Yes for curl health. Sulfates strip natural oils that curly hair desperately needs. Co-washing (conditioner-only washing) every 2-3 washes plus low-sulfate or sulfate-free shampoo once weekly is the typical curly girl approach.

How often should I wash?+

Curly hair washes less frequently than straight hair. Type 2: 2-3 times per week. Type 3: 1-2 times per week. Daily washing strips moisture causing frizz. Refresh between washes with curl refresher spray.

Best way to apply products?+

Soaking wet hair (water dripping). Apply leave-in, then gel or cream while soaking wet. Scrunch upward. This 'praying hands' or 'finger coiling' method creates defined curl pattern. Applying to damp hair instead of soaking wet causes frizz.

Air dry or diffuse?+

Diffuse with diffuser attachment on low heat for fastest defined curls. Air dry produces softest curls but takes 4-8 hours. Plopping (wrapped in microfiber towel) speeds drying and preserves curl pattern.
