Choosing a double stroller is a multi-axis problem: side-by-side or tandem, how often newborn flat-sleep is needed, doorway width at home, single-day all-terrain duty vs daily sidewalk runs, and budget. We tested eight currently-shipping doubles on real sidewalks (curb cuts, brick, gravel) and narrow apartment doorways, then ranked seven that cover the realistic buying decisions for twins, close siblings, and infant-plus-toddler pairs.

UPPAbaby Vista V3 - Best Overall
The Vista converts from single to double by adding a RumbleSeat ($199) or a second bassinet ($299). At 25.7 inches wide it fits through every doorway we tested, including a tight 26 inch hallway in a pre-war Brooklyn apartment. Both seats recline fully when paired with bassinets, making it the only true newborn-twin solution under the Bugaboo price point. The Vista frame supports a child up to 50 pounds in either seat, and the suspension handles curb drops and brick sidewalks with less jolt than any other tandem in this guide. Fold weight is 27 pounds (frame + one seat); the second seat detaches in 4 seconds for stair carrying or trunk Tetris.
The trade is price. A double-configured Vista runs $1,300 to $1,500 depending on color and seat type. Resale at 3 years holds around 50 to 55 percent on the secondary market, which softens the upfront sting.
Bugaboo Donkey 5 - Best Modular
The Donkey 5 starts as a single side-by-side at 29.5 inches wide, then expands to 41.7 inches when the second seat clicks on. This is the only stroller that legitimately moves between single and double configurations in 30 seconds without tools. Both seats accept bassinet attachments. The wheels are foam-filled with sealed bearings, designed for European cobblestone streets, so American sidewalks feel light by comparison. Fold weight is 30 pounds frame-only.
At 41.7 inches wide in double mode it does not fit through 32 inch doorways. Plan for either keeping it permanently on a porch or accepting that you fold it whenever you enter a store. Price runs $1,800 to $2,200 for the double conversion bundle.
BOB Revolution Flex Duallie - Best Jogging
The Flex Duallie is the standard against which all jogging doubles are measured. Air-filled tires (12 inch front, 16 inch rear) absorb gravel and root-strewn park paths better than any solid-wheel competitor. The front wheel swivels for tight maneuvering and locks for running. Each seat holds up to 50 pounds, total 100 pounds capacity. The handlebar adjusts through 9 positions for parents 5 feet to 6 feet 4 inches.
Weight is 33 pounds, the heaviest of our jogging-capable picks. Folding takes two steps and the folded footprint is 39 inches long, requiring an SUV cargo area or a roof carrier for sedan owners. The 30.5 inch width passes through most doorways with care.
Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 Double - Best One-Hand Fold
The City Mini GT2’s quick-fold mechanism is the best in the double-stroller category. Pull the strap in the seat with one hand and the stroller collapses in about 2 seconds. The fold is compact (37 x 30 x 12 inches), easier to wedge into a sedan trunk than most. All-terrain wheels handle curbs and uneven sidewalks though they cannot match the Flex Duallie on gravel.
Recline goes to 165 degrees, not flat. For infants the company sells a soft bassinet adapter, but the seat itself does not become a hard bassinet. Width is 29.75 inches, doorway-friendly.
Mountain Buggy Duet V3 - Best For Narrow Doors
The Duet V3 at 25 inches wide is the only side-by-side that genuinely fits through 26 inch doorways, single-file. Both seats accept carrycot bassinets sold separately. Suspension is air-filled rear tires, urban-tuned. Weight is 25 pounds, the lightest double in this guide.
The trade is rear-passenger legroom. The 25 inch width means narrower individual seat widths than the BOB or Bugaboo. Children over 3 may feel cramped. For twins under 18 months and for apartments with tight hallways, this is the unique answer.
Joovy Caboose RS - Best Sibling Stroller
For families with one infant and one toddler aged 2 to 5, the Caboose RS is the best-value answer. The front seat is a standard recline-capable stroller seat. The rear has a small bench for an older sibling and a stand-on platform for when they want to ride. The older child gets to choose, which solves the “I want to walk / I want to ride” battle. Width is 21.5 inches, doorway-friendly anywhere.
The rear seat is not a true second seat. It does not recline beyond a slight lean, so it is not suitable for newborn sibling-of-toddler pairs.
Graco DuoGlider - Best Budget
At $239 the DuoGlider is the cheapest tandem worth considering. Two reclining seats, one canopy each, 21 inch width. Both seats hold up to 40 pounds. The rear seat reclines to 130 degrees, fine for naps after 6 months, not flat. The frame is steel and heavier than premium aluminum models, but the fold is reasonably compact.
Realistic life expectancy is 18 months to 2 years of daily use. Bearings on the rear axle wear visibly by month 18 on heavy users. For grandparent house duty, vacation rental backups, or families who only need a double for a few months until the older sibling outgrows stroller life, this is the right price-to-utility ratio.
How to choose
Layout. Side-by-side for twins, similar-age siblings, and any age where both kids will resist being assigned to the “back” seat. Tandem for infant-plus-toddler pairs and for narrow apartment doorways.
Newborn flat-sleep. Required for the first 3 months. Only UPPAbaby Vista (with bassinets), Bugaboo Donkey 5, and Mountain Buggy Duet truly support this. Other models recline but not fully flat.
Doorway width. Measure the narrowest interior doorway at home. Side-by-sides at 29 to 32 inches are the squeeze tier. Tandems at 21 to 25 inches fit everywhere.
Fold ergonomics. Single-handed quick-fold (Baby Jogger) matters daily. Two-step folds (BOB, UPPAbaby) are fine if you primarily load and unload from a driveway.
Budget realism. Premium doubles cost $1,000 to $2,200. Mid-tier runs $400 to $700. Budget tier is $239 to $399 with shorter expected lifespan.

Frequently asked questions
Side-by-side or tandem - which double stroller layout is right?+
Side-by-side is better if both children are similar age and weight (twins, close siblings under 3). Both kids see forward, neither feels demoted to the back, and the stroller tracks straighter on flat sidewalks. Tandem is better for older sibling + infant pairs where the back seat needs to recline to a bassinet, and for navigating narrow store aisles and apartment doorways.
Will a double stroller fit through standard doorways?+
Standard residential doors are 32 inches wide. Side-by-side doubles run 29 to 32 inches wide, so most just fit. Tandems are typically 21 to 25 inches wide and pass through any doorway. Measure your tightest doorway (often the bathroom or apartment entry) before buying a side-by-side.
Can both seats lie flat for newborn twins?+
Yes on the UPPAbaby Vista (with two bassinet attachments, sold separately), the Bugaboo Donkey 5, and the Mountain Buggy Duet. Most other side-by-sides recline to about 150 degrees, which is fine for naps from 3 months but not for newborn flat-sleep safety. For twins under 3 months prioritize bassinet compatibility.
Are jogging double strollers safe for everyday use?+
Yes for adults who walk and jog. The fixed front wheel on a true jogger reduces wobble at speed but makes tight turns harder in a grocery store aisle. Models with a swivel-lock front wheel (BOB Revolution Flex Duallie) give both modes. Do not run with infants under 6 months. Confirm pediatrician clearance for running pre-9 months.
How long does a double stroller last?+
Premium models (UPPAbaby, Bugaboo, BOB) last 4 to 6 years of weekly use with replaceable wheels and seat fabric. Budget models last 18 months to 3 years depending on fold-mechanism wear and city sidewalk abuse. Resale value on UPPAbaby Vista is around 50 percent at 3 years, the highest in this category.
